Questions to improve the user experience

Added by Georgi Louis about 1 year ago

Hello CT-comunity,

Working with CT for several weeks now, I do have some Questions to improve my workflow and speed.

- Is there allready the announced opportunity to save the "project" in a file? (mentioned in the post: "Saving calculation")
During visual checks of the results, CT is crashing frequently. This feature would save hours of waiting!

- How to run only a defined number of steps of a script?
e.g. only the first six or up to step seven

- Is there the opportunity to change the "input results" of a step in an existing script?
e.g.: my script has 36 steps and I want to change the input results of step 4

- Is there the opportunity to insert a step in an existing script?
e.g. insert a voxelGrid filter in the beginning of an existing script?

- Is there an other useful program to edit a script to solve my questions?

Thanks for your help!

Louis

Hello,
some answers to your question:

- Is there allready the announced opportunity to save the "project" in a file? (mentioned in the post: "Saving calculation")
During visual checks of the results, CT is crashing frequently. This feature would save hours of waiting!

⇒ It is only possible to save the script (ie step sequence) for the moment, not the data in memory.
We would like to allow it, but it is a very big task, so not soon (probably not this year).
Another solution is to have an exporter / importer system able to save/load any Computree object produced by a step.
This second possibility is easier, and will probably come first, but not very quickly (probably not before months).

- How to run only a defined number of steps of a script?
e.g. only the first six or up to step seven

⇒ This is not possible yet, but not so hard to do. Will think about add this in next major release, but no promise for the moment.

- Is there the opportunity to change the "input results" of a step in an existing script?
e.g.: my script has 36 steps and I want to change the input results of step 4

⇒ Not possible for the moment. Not planned because very hard to secure (the inputs results have impacts on outputs results, so modifying inputs results for one step would oblige to reassign all the steps after it.

- Is there the opportunity to insert a step in an existing script?
e.g. insert a voxelGrid filter in the beginning of an existing script?

⇒ Not possible for the moment. A little easier than the previous one. We would like to allow it sometime in the future. No idea about when.

- Is there an other useful program to edit a script to solve my questions?

⇒ Sorry but I don’t know any program of this sort.

Sorry for giving mainly negative answers. What I understand is the need to be able to interact with script more easily. We are thinking about solutions for that, but it is not easy to implement, and we have some priorities before (eg: improve the 3D component performance and memory use, and also reduce crashing rate of Computree).

One idea is to allow saving part of scripts, to be able to add a complete sequence of steps after an existing step or between two of them. Another one is to simplify the script export format to facilitate the creation of dedicated script modification program.

For now, I can just propose to you to try using the favorites menu (don’t forget to export in case of computree crash), to have at least steps sequences to be able to create scripts faster. In next minor release (coming soon), favorites can be ordered in a sub-menu.

You know and it is Vi, the famous editor on Linux....
